Russ is our man with the vision! With over 25 years of extensive craftsmanship in the Stone Arts, he is our capable leader. His honed techniques and refined designs are what sparks and propels our team. Russ enjoys tinkering with new inventions, and collaborating with his apprentice and colleagues about better ways to get things done!
If Russ is the brains, then Eric is . . . "The Brawns!" As the new apprentice, he has enjoyed absorbing and putting into practice the collective knowledge that Russ has to offer. Together, they spend most days finessing their designs into works of art that they can be proud to present!
Sharyn is our Office Coordinator! As Russ' wedded wife for over 24 years now, she has been "The Keeper of All Things," for as long as they can remember. Sharyn keeps things flowing smoothly at the shop, by coordinating the book-keeping and administrative duties, while also supplying the menfolk with yummy treats and teas, especially on those cold days!
Samantha is our Media & Market Coordinator, and newest addition to the team! I am passionate about all things creative and artistic. My focus is on ensuring a high-quality customer experience and on forging strong community relationships. I would be pleased to hear from you personally.
Together We are Dedicated to:
"Capturing Memories in Artisan Sculpture, that will Endure for Generations."
Our journey began in the fall of 2019, as we discussed together the remarkable appreciation and appeal that these models were having on our local Art Community. We all decided that - The Collection - deserved more attention and commitment. Towards that effort, we formed our new team, Coastal Vibes! - Our goal is to produce, with much care of heart, beautiful works of art for your Home and Garden Presentations. We hope you will follow along with us on our journey, experiencing and appreciating our Coastal Community and it’s Art!
Russ Kaufman was first introduced to stone in the early 1990's, when he started working for Marathon Motor Coach of Oregon, installing marble floors in million dollar motor coaches. The variety and colors were amazing to someone who grew up in the small town of Alpine, Oregon. Because of the curves and exacting tolerances required for the job, Russ soon realized he had the aptitude for placing stone inlays, which is a very precise, artistic, hands on process. The possibilities were endless. Full of the optimism of youth, Russ moved to Florida to become a full time artist.
Knowing nothing about art and even less about marketing, reality soon started to catch up, and a traditional job became necessary. Custom Craft Marble & Stone of Orlando, turned out to be a wealth of stone working knowledge and experience. Absorbing everything available, Russ was soon getting all the interesting projects and difficult repairs that came in. Then came along the pretty girl visiting from Vermont; Sharyn. In 1996 Russ and Sharyn married and moved to her home-state, where he found work at a sculpture studio, using his dazzling "Marble" guitar as the majority of his resume.
With many adventures and stories in between, they moved to Milbridge, Maine in 2006, and eventually opened their own shop, still operational to this day. Over the many years, the Kaufmans have enjoyed and appreciated close partnerships with such companies as FreshWater Stone, The Granite Garden Gallery, and so many others.
Russ comments, "Becoming a Stone Artisan is a process of trial by fire because, even though everything has to be learned, at a professional level, either you can or you can’t. One mistake can destroy a sculpture worth more than a years pay, whereas timid moves in stone are terribly time consuming and produce weak results. The boldness to pursue your own ambitions and necessary projects, coupled with integrity and dedication is very necessary."
